Mick Manning grew up in Haworth, West Yorkshire. He has a degree in graphics and an MA in Illustration from the RCA. An authority on birds and mammals, he has been a freelance illustrator since 1982 and has taught at various art colleges around the country including Glasgow School of Art where he devised and ran the Illustration degree course for seven years.

Brita Granström grew up on a farm in a small Swedish village where her mum is a primary school teacher. She studied graphic design and illustration at Konstfack in Stockholm and later settled in Scotland where she illustrated for some Scottish newspapers. When Mick and Brita met they began making children’s books together for fun in the evenings after their day jobs.

Their first book The World is Full of Babies won the Smarties Silver Prize in 1996 and their second, What’s Under the Bed took the TES Junior Information Book Award in 1997. Yum-Yum! and How Did I Begin? were two of the six children’s books short-listed for the Rhone Poulenc Prize in 1998. In 2000 Wash Scrub Brush! won the English Association’s non fiction award for the best picture book.

As well as working together, Mick and Brita have collaborated with other authors including Karen Wallace, Martin Waddel, Sam McBratney and Joyce Dunbar. Whilst collaborating, Brita won the Oppenheim Toy Portfolio Gold Award in 2000 and had a book selected for Parenting Magazine’s Book of the Year in 1999.
